Tajik (also called Tajik Persian) is a modern variety of Persian spoken in Central Asia. Tajik belongs to the Iranian group of Indo-European languages. It is one of the two official languages of Tajikistan, the other being Russian as the official interethnic language. The standard Tajik language is based on the northwestern dialects, which have been somewhat influenced by the neighboring Uzbek language as a result of geographical proximity. In Tajikistan and other countries of the former Soviet Union, Tajik Persian is currently written in Cyrillic script with six additional letters.
