Kazakh is the official language of the Republic of Kazakhstan and a significant minority language in some areas of China and Mongolia. Kazakh is also spoken by many ethnic Kazakhs throughout the former Soviet Union, Germany, Iran, Turkey, and Afghanistan. Kazakhstan’s economy is the largest in the Central Asian states, mainly due to the country’s vast natural resources. The Kazakh government emphasizes the development of the national language, the most significant effort in this direction being the transformation of the Kazakh alphabet from Cyrillic to Latin script. The transition started in 2017 and is scheduled to be completed by 2025. Obviously, this complicates the task of Kazakh linguists.
