Kyrgyz belongs to the Turkic group of languages, which includes Kazakh, Uzbek, Turkish, Uyghur, and Tatar. Kyrgyz is the official language of Kyrgyzstan and a significant minority language in the Kizilsu Kyrgyz Autonomous Prefecture in Xinjiang, China, and in the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Province of Tajikistan. Kyrgyz has been written in a number of alphabets. During Soviet times, Kyrgyz adopted the Cyrillic script from Russian, which Kyrgyz people living in Kyrgyzstan and other post-Soviet states continue to use today. However, Kyrgyz speakers who live in China use the Perso-Arabic script.
